I’ve been a professional DJ since 1998 based in London, UK and playing a variety of music including, but not limited to, Reggae, Dancehall, Soca, Soul, Raregroove, UK Garage, Funky House, Old School R&B and Old School Hip-Hop.
I first started as a member of Da Munch Bunch with school friends including DJ Chippie and Ian Sterling who gave me my nickname from the 80’s TV character after I made a strobe light from a rotary phone and an Ikea lamp. To avoid legal issues, I took the latter spelling from my favourite 90’s manga cartoon, The Guyver, and my pseudonym was born.
I started playing the 2-step and 4×4 Garage set for the group and through our hard work, we were quickly noticed and got to perform at West End night clubs like Emporium, Propaganda, Embassy Rooms, Sound, Hammersmith Palais and MoS with some becoming short residencies. We also ran our own events including the successful Vibin’ nights which led to more attention and further bookings.
With the evolution of UKG not being favoured by clubs I needed to re-identify myself which, unfortunately, also meant leaving the group. I started doing some small events with a former colleague, DJ Sessions, later to become my mentor and greatest influence. Alongside him, I got involved with friends who were promoting rock bands with us DJing between the acts. Through this we got to work with UK soul star Beverley Knight and we played at her official Shudda Wudda Cudda Tour afterparty performing alongside former DMC World Champion, DJ Pogo.
In late 2003 we started working at Cottons Rhumshack in Camden, one of the UK’s finest Caribbean restaurants, playing Friday and Saturday nights. Over the next 9 years we maintained our residency although I did take a sabbatical on a couple of occasions. The restaurant had celebrities such as Samuel L Jackson, Jay-Z and Beyoncé, Usain Bolt and former Chelsea players, Didier Drogba, Geremi and Claude Makelele (one of my favourite players ever) through it’s doors and we had the pleasure of playing in front of most of them. The late Amy Winehouse was a frequent patron too and I had the privilege to meet her on a couple of occasions.
Through our work at Cottons, we also had the fortune of being booked for the wedding of Mr & Mrs Frank Duberry formerly of Leeds, Chelsea and Reading FC in Spring 2004. The guests included faces from all over the football and entertainment worlds and still remains one of my best nights as a DJ. There is nothing like seeing some of your idol’s doing the electric slide to Candy, which back then wasn’t as popular as it is now (for those of you that don’t know, see the last scene of the film “The Best Man” for the origins of this current atrocity!).
After being flung in the deep end as a wedding DJ with that event, I have since been booked for many more. This has included being flown to the Alpine ski resort of Chamonix with turntables, mixer, Serato and laptop in tow but worth the effort as the venue had some of the most stunning views I’ve ever seen.
With DJ Sessions leaving the UK in 2008, I joined up properly with Mr Marvellous who had been a long time collaborator. Together we maintained the reputation DJ Sessions and I had earned as one of the best kept secrets in London. Due to a change of management in Camden and the fortunate opening of a new Cottons Rhumshack in Shoreditch, we relocated to ply our trade in London’s trendy tech hub, bringing friend DJ Jairzinho of LuvFreeness to join us. But unfortunately due to performance regulations at the Boxpark venue, this prematurely ended in autumn 2013.
In the meantime Marvellous and I worked both together and alone doing ad-hoc events and parties. I also had the pleasure of working again with DJ Chippie when we both played at a charity event in aid of our mother country, Sri Lanka. I also did a couple of shows on popular internet station iLiveRadio, founded by my mentor DJ Sessions.
All was not lost however for Marvellous and MacGuyver, and this year, after a refurbishment and a change of management in Cottons Camden, we returned to our spiritual home where we continue to entertain our patrons, both famous and not. If you want to see what consitutes a “normal” night then please have a listen to some of my live recordings of the nights… when I remember to press record!
I still occasionally do mix CD’s but due to other commitments, these aren’t as easy to do as they were…but you can find some of my select masterpieces on this site including my personal favourite, the Death Row vs Bad Boy CD. It is still a hard standard for me to beat 11 years after I made it! You can also check out my mixcloud page where you can listen to some of my older mixes
